1985 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra)
Stored perfectly since release. Mid red with some bricking. Bouquet of lovely plums and dark berries. Obvious oak. Nice. Wine has very good length but is swamped and ruined by excess oak, which is too strong, dominant and very woody. Clarity of fruit has been monopolised. Unbalanced. 2nd bottle same. Perfectly stored bottles, purchased on release. No ullage and cork only 25% stained. Very disappointing.
83 / 100
1985 Chateau Leoville Barton (St.-Julien)
Nice long cork. Mid red with some brown edges. Bouquet and palate? No fruit whatsoever, only a torrent of tannin and bitterness and the smell of rats! Obviously faulty.
