I put in a bid on a recent job lot at the local plonk auction. The lot was describes as "Australian Reds in extremely doubtful condition" or near enough. No brands were mentioned. 14 bottles. I bid $1 per bottle and bloody won.
Opened the pack when I got them. The two bottles lying on top were Arrowfield Reserve Merlot 1985, both with high shoulder fills. The first bottle I pulled out of the box was another Arrowfield but this time a 1987. Somewhat disappointed I continued looking to find the rest was made up of a mix of Kies Estate 1985, 1986, and 1987 Shiraz and Cabernet, all with reasonable fills well into the neck.
Well to lengthen a long story, I opened a Kies Estate "Shiraz Big Red" Old 1908 Vineyard to see what was going on.
Not sensational but still a good honest shiraz that still had plenty of colour, certainly with bricking at the edge, and demonstrated still plenty of dark plum and spice on the nose and with the addition of leather and licorice in the mouth. All in all a very pleasurable drink and 100 stars on TORB's scale for value.
I reckon I more than got my moneys worth with the first bottle and look forward to sliding into the rest of the Kies at any rate. The Arrowfield I am not that sure of.
