2002 Peos "Manjin" Chardonnay, Margaret River
This wine got a top gong (Gold, Trophy?) at the recent Royal Qld Wine Show - didn't get to taste it on the day, but it was on the trophy table with Yattarna and Bin00A. Anyway thanks to Steve Knight for this one - the wine is going for $25 which I think is a bargain, and under stelvin to boot. Eaten with fish and chips (grilled tuna actually, which was VERY overdone - asked for medium, when am I going to learn - ask for rare Gerard!!!)
Very pale
Clean crisp nose of lemon, creme brulee, lemon thyme, minerals, can't smell much oak (good!)
Palate follows suit with lemon butter / brulee flavours, a hint of under-ripe tangy pineapple, not too much malo (don't know the percent if any but it certainly isn't dominant), not too much oak (ditto) and a fine minerally faintly nutty / mealy finish. Long, great acid.
Not a big, tropical / stonefruit MR chardy at all (2002 cooler year?).
Really impressed for the price, probably would have been even better if allowed to warm up a bit, and eaten with better food, in better glasses etc.
93/100 Value Outstanding
Could cellar for 2-3 yrs, maybe more (not experienced in cellaring chardies)
