2000 Tyrrells Vat 47 Chardonnay (Hunter)
A clear pale straw colour - very light for a 4 year old chardonnay. A tight restrained nose of grapefruit with melon, and an underlying clove/spice tone from quality oak. The palate is flavourful yet restrained and very pure. There is no sign of overt buttery/malo characters. One of the few Oz chardies I've ever tasted that actually had a back palate worth speaking of. A fine interplay of acid and gentle oak tannins combine with quality fruit to give an even balance across the palate, and a persistently lingering finish. Terrific wine, with years ahead of it.
cheers,
Graeme
