Recently in a bric a brac/second hand store I saw a container of "Wine Bottle Cellar Dust" that you could shake over your bottles to give them that cellared look ..........

I've got a tub of this at home from a friend who knew the guys who came up with the idea (I think they worked for Orlando). The creator bet that wine lovers would fork out money to buy a container of dust with a label on it, and produced them to prove his point.

But did anyone buy any?

A bit more information on this sideline from a few weeks ago.

Peter Joy who was the sales manager at Berri Estates (and prior to that Orlando) came up with these about 1980. He ended up producing a whole pallet of the cans (measuring about four feet square and six feet high) to make it cost effective. The thousands that were made sold out surprisingly quickly, but as the bet was settled, there were no plans for a sequel.

Interesting.
I've heard of this some time ago. On the opposite scale as ALL of my bottles in my cellar are individually wrapped in dual layer newspaper on purchase, I take great pride in the fact that even my 12 years old labels look brand NEW when I serve my wines at dinners.
For me it's a great thrill to see them in absolute new condition, kept away from light and dust forever.
(I started this in 1992 to check each individual wine in a dozen to make sure there are no leaking bottles on purchase. Also when they leak, they stain the newspaper so I can pick them off the rack easy and drink them earlier than the rest.)
Cheers,
Attila

Finally got around to putting up some pics, although I really need a better camera to get sharper details of the amusing story on the side. Only just noticed the maker is Old Bulls' - just missing the last three letters!

When I started my 'cellar' in 1981 a mate gave me a tub - a bit of fun and I think I still have it somewhere under the house - Hoppysan

So your tub of wine cellar dust will be nicely coated in wine cellar dust :)
