Auswine Tasting Panel - 13-August-2004

Post by markg »

A hastily convened tasting panel converged on Gavins place last Friday night to help him consume a number of wines that were in need of some drinking.

2001 Uleybury Wines Hand Picked Semillon
Pale yellow with a nose of toast, lemon, lime, a little pear and honey. A very pleasing tropical palate of some peach, pineapple, pear with some nice lemon and lime on the finish. A drink now wine for the summer.

2001 Barrossa Ridge Valley of Vines - Red Blend
A dusty nose of blackcurrants, toast and spice. Quite an interesting palate with savoury characteristics, persistent finish and quite harsh tannins. Needs some time in the cellar.

2002 Ulebury wines basket press shiraz, AP Reserve
A deep dark purple with quite a grapey nose with a pleasing, rich, creamy palate of black fruits, chocolate and liqueur plums. It holds its alcohol quite well at 15.5%.

2001 Leeuwin Estate Art series shiraz
A sweet nose of black fruits, fig and orange. An interesting palate, but not my sort of style.

2002 Serefino Shiraz, McLaren Vale
A dark purple color with a nose of red berry, charry oak, chocolate and exotic spices. A nice medium palate with savoury, nutty characteristics and hints of liqueur plums, quite well integrated tannins and acid. A very nice wine, very good with the marinated chicken wings.

2002 Irvine Zinfandel Reserve, Eden Valley
This turned out to be the wine of the night, everyones fave by a longshot. A strawberry red color with full bodied, mouthfilling flavours of brambles, spicy plum pudding and cherries. Good concentration and length. It was a pearler with food, yum.

This was Gavins ringer, a nose of meat, tar and liqueur plums, a very intense, overly sweet palate of marachino cherry, truffles and vanilla, very rich and full bodied, but too over the top for me, a big sweety, fruit bomb. Might be nice to drink after dinner with some cheese and fennel maybye, but didn't go well on its own. The winner of the latest Shiraz Challenge, the Bullers Calliope.
Cheers
