1982 Chateau Calon-Ségur
Staring to show its age with very light brown but very difficult to ascertain given the abundant sediment. With the one-third glass held up to the fluorescent light, it seems almost opaque! The bouquet lifts some dry liquorice, black olives, dark plums and dark chocolate. Complex. Lovely stuff! The palate is seamless, with excellent harmony and balance. Incredibly silky with great mouth feel. Very classy. Excellent length. Dry and powdery – no velvety – tannins. Appears at its peak but will clearly hold for many years. Has a beguiling Proustian beauty. Hard to isolate the distinct fruit flavours on the palate (apart from myriad black fruits) but the wine enchants the whole way. After 24 hours in my glass (an experiment), no change. I might be under estimating this – just lacked a killer “wow†factor to take it higher.
Excellent 18.5 / 20
