The 98 version is, I believe, a bit better than the 2001 I tasted last year - which is a bit higher-toned, sweeter, not quite as balanced.
With recent discussions on Tanzer's Australian comments, and much speculation that the 98 vintage produced early drinkers that may not hold up well over time, this was a great counterpoint to both. It is indeed a big wine, ripe, concentrated, and powerful, but suits my tastes perfectly (especially for the pairing with grilled tri-tip)
