A Grenache 70% Shiraz 25% Mourvedre 5% blend.

Chocolate,tobacco, liquorice and spice hints with raspberry fruit on the nose..a concentrated palate follows thru with ripe fruit flavours..some savoury nuances (or rustic as d'Arenburg puts it) appearing but this wine is still young..it needs a few more years to get some complexity.A reasonably powerful GSM with a decent finish of powdery tannins..i rate it 90 points and strongly question its price tag of $65..wtf?There is no way this wine is worth the price.Very poor value.

Give me the 99 Rockfords Moppa Springs for $22 anyday.

Good wine but should be no more than $30..and that would be stretching it.

It retails cheaper here in Hong Kong than Australia. About $50 Aussie a bottle. With wine tax here of 80%.Go figure?

Maybe the Australian domestic market subsidises the export market!


Incidentally, Parker rated the wine 93pts. I find him off the mark when it comes to GSM ( Aussie & French ).

I agree with you regarding Moppa. Underrated with a little bottle age.

This wine was a major dissapointment..i was looking for a benchmark aussie GSM and got a very average wine for the price. I prefer the Moppa Springs 1999 and will have to get myself another case.

I get the impression the Ironstone Pressings seems to be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair depending on the quality of the vintage.

I haven't tried it for years, but the 1998 was a magnificent, unique concoction that manage to upstage the Dead Arm and Coppermine Road head to head on release, and it was still freely available around $45.

The 2001 I tried back in March was a major disappointment. Coincidientally, so was the Custodian which now has a downgraded label and price tag to match.
