Oooh this is moreish.

Purple red. Clearly a GSM fine peppery, spicy meat, earthy, plums and blackberry. Also a chocolately and borderline cola element in the palate. The alcohol is a tingle, but is in check. Oak a touch green and piney on the finish, but hardly an issue Elegant tannins. If you like ripe Barossa rhone blends this is the business, and $25 or so is good value.

Couldn't agree more. Tried this with Rolf along with all the new Magpie releases, Hanisch etc Tuesday and the wine stood out very well, lovely wine indeed.

In that style I was also very impressed with the Magpie Grenache Mourvedre. The Mourvedre gives that touch of meaty darkness to give depth to the Grenache, again, dangerously drinkable!

Now let's talk 2002 Magpie the Election Shiraz ... seriously good wine this!

Just got my Veritas newsletter and I'm off tomorrow to cellar door to grab a few bottles of the 02 Heinrich and the 02 J J Hahn "The Reginald" - which sounds interesting.

I've had a few of the 02 GSM's now (drinking more Hewitsons Miss Harry now), and the Heinrich is a clear winner for me so far. Were you looking at the Magpie Estate Schnell? I liked the 02 and the 03, but neither has the complexity of the Heinrich.

The 02 Heysen is absolutely amazingly ball-tearingly teriffically stunning - schwing! Had this beside the 01 Hanisch and the 02 Election (and the 01 JJ Hahn 1914 I think), and the 02 Heysen cr@pped all over the lot of them. Criminal you cant get it in Australia. 95 or 96 points, Outstanding on the TORB scale, etc etc.

There you go, middle of the road Wizz sticks his neck out!

have to agree with you. Twice I have had the Hanisch and Heysen together and both times have preferred the Heysen. Most of the others voted for the Heysen.
We can sit on our little deserted Island and smile the contented smile and lick the lips.

When I tasted them I thought exactly the same thing as you did. Rolf proffered the opinion that the Heysen is a bit like a "show pony" in that, although it is showing well now, in the longer term the Hanisch will be the better wine.

The Heysen was still very much a babe in arms and wasnt quite together yet, but the componenets were so good I liked it anyway. The 01 Hanisch was still very fine indeed (93-94 points to the Heysens 95-96),

Did Rolf say what "long term" was? I've never kept Barossa reds much beyond 10 years.

very unusual purple label, not the Schnell, a different wine.

A little dearer, but still very affordable. I found it a little more intense or 'serious' due to the Mourvedre. Liked it a lot, more then the Schnell and the Christa Rolf.

What was you opionion of the Election 2002, I thought it very showy, approachable and absolutely delicious.

There were a couple of bottles of the 02 Election floating around, I think the one I looked at was showing less well than the others. Everyone else was oohing and aahing, but the people near me werent getting too excited, it came across as very sweet and oaky.

Reserve judgement on the Election.

What did you think of the Shiraz Mourvedre Pressings, had a wonderful chocolate finish I've not seen before on a 'Bulls Blood'.

Strangely it wasnt part of the lineup, and I havent had the 02 at all. Like the 00, and thought the 01 was a bit of a beast. if the 02 is a bit softer I might have to take a look at some stage.

All this wine, so little time and money..
