Adelaide BYO

I had a previous thread running from years ago though I can’t find it ( nor my Wendouree notes thread which I may do something about elsewhere ).

Last night was $1 Tuesday corkage at The Pantry on Prosepect Rd. Very nice food I think all SA sourced!

Penny Blue in the Marriot does the most amazing Beef Wellington and corkage $40 which I know will upset the yocals. But it’s fair. Or you can pair it with Hentley Farm’s The Beast Shiraz. I’ve booked in Friday and paring a 98 Wendouree Cabernet. It’s the best Beef Wellington this side of Mayfair.

Mensa kitchen on the Parade in Kent Town offer $45 corkage. Food is excellent. A modern take and combined with high quality ingredients it does exceptionally well.

I’m hoping this a trend in Adelaide. What many would consider a “pricy” corkage offers a diner the chance to take a decent bottle and the restaurant to make the minimum profit on a bottle. That’s fair?

Anyways I paid $45 to take a bottle of gloriously mature Cote Rotie from my cellar. An equivalent would be $500 plus on the list. It costs nothing to drink from your personal cellar. Just the $45 corkage tonight. Or you can pay $80 for a $25 wine. I can’t see the fuss Adelaidians.

Jamie,
Agree with this, I don't mind paying that sort of corkage for a good bottle which would obviously be $$$ if it was on the wine list. For example, took some good bottles to Chianti this week.
cheers, Malcolm

Hi Malcom,

I’ve done the same at Chianti. I think about $40?

Took an old Brunello and something similar and current release on their wine list $800. So had no issues with corkage!

I’ve never been enamoured with Chianti to the local excitement levels. Have you tried Mensa? It’s a modern take on ITA food. We found some dishes elevated beyond some Piedmont experiences. Outstanding for ADL.

Bargain Craig! Take your 71 Grange for an amazing dinner and all it costs you is $100! Or pay $5000 off the list I’m guessing?

Bravo Magill Estate.

Or do as I just did tonight. Bottle of 2024 Chablis from Ch de Fleys and a bottle of 2016 Ch Lannesan at Kin Kin in Hutt Street. Great flavours, wine went ok and bugger all corkage. Got out of there for less than $200 for four

Esmay’s on Hackney Rd awarded a Michelin Star and I was very pleased to be told with an upcoming booking, BYO is $60 for one bottle.

Excellent! I’ll take a mature GC Burgundy I paid $150 for 20 years ago that would be thousands a bottle off a wine list these days.
