This wine is based on Mourvedre, and Bandol is probably the most lauded region for this variety on earth. Purple black in colour and 14.5% alcohol.

Speaking of earth, that’s the initial whiff on the nose. Underneath that, there’s developed blueberry, mulberry and dark plums, vanilla, savoury, and almost smoky notes.

The palate allows the fruit to come through a little more – in fact, the fruit is showing a little tartness, along with some leather. There’s a milk chocolate textural element to the wine, and acid is juicy and mouthwatering. Tannins are big and grippy, and the finish is quite long.

I suspect this will improve in the medium term – but I am no expert on these wines. There’s reasonable balance right now, and I would advise longer decanting time than I gave this one as it opened up nicely.

Cheers
