Crystal decanters and lead poisoning

I read an interesting sticker on a crystal decanter I saw in a shop recently. It was a warning not to store your alcohol in the decanter for too long. Basically, there is a belief that the acid in the alcohol can leach lead out of the crystal and into the beverage.

I am not sure how much proof there is, it seems logical, however, I am a little sceptical as I am sure my Grandfather would keep crystal decanters of port and whisky around the house for years and he died of natural causes in his late nineties!!

Anybody heard of any recent evidence ?

Mark,

In out litigious society it is probably akin to warning people that wine may contain trace amounts of nuts.

Ah hah! That explains it, I have been drinking Malt Whisky from the same decanter for 25 years.
