G'day

Corin Lamont is the daughter of the legendary Jack Mann, Houghton's winemaker for 51 vintages and creator of Houghton's White Burgundy, among many other wines. The Lamonts winery in the Swan Valley has made a changing variety of wines over many years, and the Family Reserve was a variable blend of reds, but usually based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The 2011 was a Cabernet Malbec (no other grapes), with the Cabernet from the Great Southern, and Malbec from Donnybrook. The winery no longer makes the wine on-site, and there is no longer a Family Reserve, although their website does offer a 2021 Cabernet Malbec.

Deep crimson in colour. 13.9% alcohol. Developed black fruits on the nose, with dark plums, blackberries and cassis alongside savoury oak and some spice. The palate is grippy and tannic, with the fruits on the front and middle palate, some leather, and moderate acid carrying the wine through.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this wine - I found a single bottle at the back of the cellar, and I had drunk the 2014's already - and I am pleasantly surprised that it has held up as well as this. Not going to improve, and on the downward slide, but still enjoyable nonetheless.

Cheers

Your TNs on wines from Great Western are welcomed and assist expanding my knowledge of this emerging area. The cabernet malbec blends have continued to impress. The Houghtons CW Ferguson is my pick so far but there are plenty of good stuff to be had.

Cheers
