Yarra Yering

Hi All,

I've had Yarra Yering on my list of wines to try, and to potentially start adding to my cellar.

Last week I received an email with their vintage release of the 2023 Light Dry Red Pinot Shiraz (50:50 blend). Didn't pull the trigger...

Looks like the Dry Red No.1 is the one everyone talks about too.

Have also read on this forum they don't represent very good value for money and can be underwhelming given the reputation.

Should I devote my efforts and $$ elsewhere in the Yarra Valley? i.e. Giant Steps/Seville/Serrat/Hoddles Creek.... Already on the Mount Mary band wagon.

Would appreciate any thoughts/advice!

I agree YY is off my radar now, used to buy quite a bit. Yes MM is exxy but Quintet is a wine I really enjoy.
I have picked up the last couple of vintages of Yeringberg and might have a look at Oakridge Estate.

Cheers Craig

I thought the light dry red was pretty good when I tasted it at the Cellar door a couple of months ago - I think my wife bought me a bottle to take home. All the wines I tried though were overpriced. If money does not matter then go for it, but I think you can drink better for less, although that’s getting harder and harder in the Yarra.

Both Serrat and Hoddles Creek are must buys every year for me. Excellent wines and great VFM.

I bought some of the ‘’22 Light Dry Red and it was excellent. $90 from cellar door, available for $70 at plenty of places.

Cheers
Ian

I guess VFM is in the eye of the beholder but that aside I think that YY Cabernet based wines are outstanding, if perhaps just a small margin behind the Yarra’s very top Cabernet, Mt Mary.
I have followed YY since their first release in 1973 and have enjoyed the wines immensely. However I would say that, as good as the wines made by the founder Bailey Carrodus were, there is a case for the wines produced by current winemaker Sarah Crowe to be considered as the best made in the vineyard’s history. There is a cleanliness and purity of fruit in today’s wines that was perhaps masked by a little volatility in the old days.
So “Jminas” if the budget allows I would recommend that you take a look at the YY DRW No 1 now and also buy a couple for the cellar - they’ll do 20 plus years on the bit and you’ll be handsomely rewarded.

I may get 2-3 2021 Number 1 at some stage, if only to look at this, MM Quintet and Yeringberg Cabernets. I am hopeful that there may be an option out there to get them cheaper than $150 though.

Cheers Craig

Thanks All - will look to get my hands on some 2021 No.1 when I get the chance.
