I've been collecting this wine for some years now, following an Auswine offline in Adelaide that introduced me to the 1996 Great Western Shiraz (which became the St Peters, named after the first vineyard planted in the area in I think 1863). Thisis now one of my 6 pack buys each year. Last time I opened a 2013 was with my wine tasting group in late 2020, and this was the group note:
Seppelt St Peters 2013 (Great Western, Victoria: Deep purple in colour. The nose was quite muted – what eventually came out was blueberries and other darker fruits, five-spice and pepper. The quality of the fruit was commented on. The palate sung a little more – plush and velvety, with the fruit complemented by molten chocolate and some freshening acid. Medium to long finish, and a well-balanced wine. Probably opened too young.
Decanted two hours before service. It's developed modestly in the past couple of years. There's still blueberries and dark plums on the nose, along with black pepper and some cocoa powder. The palate has also opened up a little - there's still that texture of molten chocolate over the depth of fruit, with slightly prickly acid and grippy tannins in support. Long finish and good palate weight without being heavy.
