Wow, what a surprise. I have just tried this little gem with some members of my family. It was originally a birth year gift to my brother.
Obviouse age but amazing colour. The wine was still a bright clear red, still fresh and appealing despite nearly thirty years of age.
The nose was not intense and took some time in the decanter to really emerge. It showed hints of small dried berries, savory notes and well balanced oak.
The palate was silky smooth and brilliantly complex. The fruit was still there in the background but had become old and dry. A strong acid backbone was in balance and was just perfect to keep this wine alive.
This wine was purchased at auction for under $10. It has restored my faith that true bargains do exist if you are willing to take a chance.
Had to correct the vintage. Sorry.
