TN: Gemtree Ernest Allan Shiraz 2013

Post by Waiters Friend »

Gemtree is a biodynamic winery in McLaren Vale. The Ernest Allan is one of their 'reserve' wines, and a step up from their delicious 'Uncut' Shiraz. It spends 20 months in French oak. This wine followed me back to WA from a visit to their cellar door in 2016.

Deep purple in colour. The nose shows dark plums, vanilla and milk chocolate, cloves and atouch of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is more intense, with the dark fruits more noticeable, but over moderately complex layers of cedary oak, supporting acid and integrating tannins. medium- to full-bodied, and a lovely lingering finish.

In 2016, I was told by a couple of the wineries I visited that the 2013's would be earlier drinking than the surrounding vintages. No this one - there's plenty of time left and it should improve modestly over the next 2 years, and probably hold for 5.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
