TN: Inkwell I&I Shiraz 2012 (McLaren Vale)

Purchased at a tasting at least 5 years ago hosted by Dudley and Irina, the owners of Inkwell. 21 months in 14% new and 86% older French oak. 14.5% alcohol

Deep purple in colour. Vibrant nose with lifted dark plums, mocha, cloves, vanilla and blueberries almost bouncing out of the glass. There's also an interesting (and very McLaren Vale) touch of earthiness. The palate is powerful but not hot or sharp - the dark fruits are still to the fore (with signs of slight savoury development), and the wine is full bodied without being broad. The wine is consistent on the finish as well - the flavours flow well down the throat and linger for quite some time.

This bottle is better (and better balanced) than the last one I had about 3 years ago, and is drinking beautifully. No rush to drink up though, this will have another 5 years in it.

Cheers
Allan

Thanks Allan. This is a label I’d never heard of until now...

I had not heard of it either. Apropos the cellar door thread, you said the tasting was hosted by the owners, so I was wondering if it was at a retil outlet or a wine show?

Thanks ...................... Mahmoud.

Neither, Mahmoud. One of our Grand Cru wine tasting group members arranged for them to run a tasting for us in Perth, after the member visited the S.A. cellar door.
