How Good is the 2017 Vintage in OZ?

Post by Chuck »

I've been hearing the 2017 vintage is shaping up as an exceptional year. In my limited experience so far with this vintage the Clare and EV rieslings were a real step up and Margaret River chardys are crackers. Some SA reds are also impressive.

Any other experiences or views out there?

Carl, you are right re Riesling, brought a few 17s, not that I need anymore, but very very good.
I have tried '17 Bowen Shiraz half a dozen times now, really rich and plush. Mind you '16 was great as well and just ordered the 18s.

Cheers Craig

No. It's an odd vintage; can't have been good in SA.

2017 not so good in Coonawarra (wet and cold) but very good in 2018?

The Bowen 2018 (both shiraz and cab) were excellent I thought

i picked at marius in mac vale with some other forumites in 2017. in terms of volume it blew 2016 into the weeds.
quality wise i'm not sure. i've so often read that the low yields and struggling crops produce the best juice.work harder etc etc
But to be honest i'm outta my depth on that. volume wise 2018 was similar to 2017 and 2019 was back down to the levels of 2016. 2020 down again i'm told.
2017 i remember the vines in mc vale absolutely bursting wherever i looked.

I am a bit of an outlier with Bindi, never been impressed. No idea why.

Fine vintage for Hunter reds too, although I think most of them are sold by now...

From what I was told the Barossa was a bit wet. High yields though quality down a bit. 2018 was excellent according to the people I trust. I remember being at a winery in mid 2018 and I asked the winemaker (who never bullshits and tells it like it is) what 2017 and 2018 were like. His opinion was that 17 was OK but 18 will be special (Barossa).
I have had some amazing Grenache already from the 18 vintage in Barossa.

Cheers

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Hi Ian, was that your mate Barry? What a shame about the Black Magnum golf. On the other hand, such a first world problem considering our upside down world. Take care everyone.

2017 produced some ripper CV Riesling. A few makers who I trust told me it is one of their 4 best vintages this century

No, Dave, not Barry. Another winemaker who is very well thought of by many.

Yes we too were disappointed about the Black Magnum. We coincide it with a week in the Barossa every May. We guessed it would be cancelled a couple of weeks before they pulled the pin. The effect this pandemic is having on the economy will be felt for many years to come. Some very rough seas ahead for many of us.

Stay safe
Ian
