2000 Pikes Riesling, Clare Valley (11%)

I opened this last week, one of a pair that I brought back from Australia some years ago. I don't have any notes but have some general impression which I thought I'd share for those who might be interested in old rieslings. I'm not sure what this vintage was like in the Clare but this bottle has traveled well for what I now know is their entry level wine. The colour was on the yellow side of straw and belied its 19 years. The nose however showed its age offering a hint of the riesling petrol and did not fool the brains of the operation. She guessed riesling, that it was Aussie, and that it was on the older side. The palate was likewise on the lighter side, almost a pale, watery version of what I look for in an aged riesling. Make no mistake, it still affords some interest, at least for me, offering citrus and lime blossom as well as older riesling notes and enough acidity and freshness, but lacking that extra edge.

Is this all it can aspire to or is there another corner to turn. The only way to find out is to hang on to the last bottle.
