Wine and spices in pantry

Post by Nick Wine Guy »

Hi guys, so I've just moved to a new place, planning on buying a wine fridge soon, right now my wine is in boxes on the bottom, tile of the pantry. I've got dried goods and spices in there and it's not smelling entirely neutral, let's say.

Is this likely to impact my wines in the short to medium term? Cork and/or screwtop? My best stuff is cork and in styrofoam + cardboard box.

I wouldn't worry about it, if anything some additional notes of anise, cinnamon, etc will only add to the complexity of the wines.

(And is that why the wine I've been storing next to the toilet reeks of brett?)

In theory the perfect cork is hermetically sealed so no air (and presumably odours) can be exchanged between the inside and outside of the bottle. Even in the worse case scenario where there is a small amount of ingress I don't think it is going to matter.
