Purple red in colour.

Rich nose with Christmas cake, raisin, prunes, and chocolate. Some savoury and earthy notes as well. Primary fruit has largely gone, but there's the remains of some dark plums. The palate is concentrated, without being overly dense or viscous - there's only a touch of alcoholic heat, and the dried fruit flavours predominate, with some dried herbs in the background. Tannins are substantial and drying, and the wine finishes quite long.

When I think of big Barossa shiraz, I think ripe, syrupy and big fruit. This has a lot more poise and subtlety and for me is so much better as a result, possibly as a result of ageing. As a young wine, it was likely to fit my "big Barossa" mould.

Cheers
Allan

I found TF if professionally cellared could go to 15-20 years- just. Was surprised by its limits. This was the 96,99,98 etc. Unsure of the new style and SC?

Had two bottles of the 05 in recent years. One so-so, one excellent - and with time to go too.

Had a dinner with Peter Schulz a while back and he said that, with a few notable exceptions, most Barossa Shiraz was best at the 8-10 year mark. He said that was when he preferred to drink TF Shiraz.

Cheers

Stephen Henschke had the same ridiculously conservative drinking windows in the 90’s . They’ve now significantly changed to the upside.

Respectful cellaring changed the drinking windows. I do think he is correct with TF. Mine just hang on beyond 15.

To be honest I don’t buy Barossa Shiraz that’s best to drink so early - prefer the 15 to 20 year mark
