Peel Estate Shiraz 2009

Post by Waiters Friend »

This was the note from a vertical tasted in 2015:

Peel Estate Shiraz 2009: The nose shows lots of ripe satsuma plums, plum conserve, mocha, blueberry, and cinnamon spice. The palate is slightly alcoholic on the initial pour, with smooth grippy tannins and a long finish.

The tasting http://forum.m.auswine.com.au/forum3/viewto ... be#p128357 suggested that the optimum drinking time for PE shiraz is between 10 and 15 year of age. This wine has just entered the window.

I'm also aware from PE themselves that 2009 was probably going to be a slightly earlier drinking wine than the majority, and tonight's tasting (who am I kidding - we drank the bottle) certainly supports that.

Dark plums, not jammy though, and blueberries dominate the nose. There's some cinnamon and mocha, and these are starting to push forward in comparison to the primary fruit. There's no alcoholic heat beyond a 'normal' shiraz, and it's come together well. It's full bodied, finishes long, and was certainly very satisfying, without being overly heavy. Balance?

Unlike some other PE shiraz, however, I suspect this may change in the next 2-3 years. if you have stocks of this, I would be trying them at least every six months (and I will).

I'm obviously not following my own advice of trying one every six months. The 2019 tasting note still largely holds true, with developing dark plums and blueberries present. There's a fair amount of spice and cedar and the nose has a mix of sweet and savoury elements.

The palate is full without being heavily textured, and altogether the wine is as satisfying as it was 18 months ago. Despite my previous misgivings, there's at least a couple of years left in this one.
