Decanted 30 minutes before service. It took another 15 minutes or so in the glass to emerge.
Initially earthy, then the dark berries came out - primarily blueberry, with some blackberry as well. Obviously this was not fresh fruit, but it wasn't dried or jammy either - the aromas were clear. There's also a lot of supporting mocha and cocoa powder. The nose itself was quite complex, and it was interesting to see the wine change in the glass over about 30 minutes.
The palate supported the nose - not a lot of acid, and tannins fully absorbed. There's a wash of developed fruits and chocolate on the tongue, and the wine was medium bodied, and fading slightly on the finish.
Not bad at all for 23 years of age, and better than expected. Fortunately, there were enough people drinking it to ensure that the majority was consumed before the wine started to decline, which it did within an hour of opening.
Cheers
