Relaxed Yarra weekend highlights

Post by odyssey »

Went down to the Yarra for the long weekend (yes AFL was on, no we didn't go there for it). We didn't do any bookings (given it was AFL weekend) but of the publicly open cellar doors we went to, highlights were:

Pimpernel - after hearing good things both here and whilst down there, had to visit. Lovely wines, somewhat French in styling. Love the Pinot and Syrah. Even the rose, maybe the most provencale style I've had in Australia (and I don't drink rose). Gave us a taste of his barrel sample muscat and I have to get my hands on this stuff when its released (Dec, cellar door only... somehow).
Mac Forbes - at their Healesville town bar/cellar. As expected (for me) fun to drink, I do enjoy their gear, especially the EBs.
Maddens Rise - a very pleasant discovery, lovely wines with kindof modern italianesque flair. Grape varieties were a mix of italian and the more common/french-origin, sometimes blended with each other. They mentioned learning things from Luke Lambert, I wasn't sure if this was official or unofficial but they've done nicely.

Food:
Melbourne
Tipo00 very good handmade pasta, nice vibe if a bit cramped for space. Interesting wine list by the glass (important thing for us, we can't do a bottle), heavy italian focus of course. Food nearly as good for me as Il Bacaro (still a fave).

Yarra Valley
The Stables at Stones - Lovely setting, an old stables house, flowers and candelabras fill up the center of longish tables and separate dining couples at each end. Food solid good (especially liked the savoury dishes).
Ezard at Levantine Hill - this is the Yarra branch of the restaurant by the same name in Melbourne (and Black by Ezard in Sydney). This is a super-slick operation. Hatted-quality food and service with well trained, relaxed but professional staff. Top stuff.
K&B Kitchen and Butcher, Healesville - So this not a restaurant, but this is one amazing old school deli! Top selection of aged or cured meats, a huge cheese cabinet, etc. There can be a bit of queue for them to slice meats. Buy some good bread and have an amazing picnic.
