Melbourne Offline / Fri 24 Aug / 10yo+ Cabernet
Posted: Tue Aug 07, 2018 9:46 pm
by mjs
n4sir is over in Melbourne later this month, ostensibly for footy
, so we thought we'd organise an offline
Theme: Cabernet or Cabernet dominant 10+yo
Date: Friday 24th August
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Bergerac, 555 Lonsdale St Melbourne
Methodology: Everyone brings a reasonable quality on-theme wine, cabernet or cabernet dominant, ten years or more old. We all let Ozzie W know the wine and Ozzie will compile and publish the list of wines prior (say by 20th Aug) and everyone provides their ranking of the wines pre-tasting. Wines are then tasted double blind with the aim of ranking then overall as tasted and identifying each wine if possible. Then all are revealed and we can compare with prior predictions.
We did this with a different category of wine a couple of years ago at Scopri and again at Choi's recently, its a bit of fun. In the last tasting of seven wines at Choi's, the most anyone got right was three, so it's a fun test.
Please put your hand up if you want to join us, we will limit numbers to nine.
Wines are now finalised! Should be a Cabernet extravaganza!
cheers

Indeed. Con is first cab off the rank with a 1980 Moss Wood.

Does it have to be from Auz ? I have a 78 Bdx I can bring along. I think it’s Loeville Poyferre. It’s in good nick - it’s a present from a friend and together we have drunk quite a bit of his 78 stash (and mine, which I finished 10 years or so ago)

Old World Cabernet is fine. Makes it all the more interesting when tasting blind.

Ok, looks like we are at our limit of nine. If anyone else is interested, please post on this thread and you can go on the “reserve” list. A spot might open up.

No, but the heart is....looking forward to meeting everyone.
I didn’t move the wine collection over, but trips back result in the odd interesting bottle. Backup up will be 06 Le Grand Clos from Chateau de Villeneuve.

Ian/Cameron/Michael,
Can you pm me your email, there’s a bit of organisation to do beforehand and it’s easier to do via email, rather than in the thread.
Cheers, Malcolm

Block 42 is the bane of my wine life. My first stash (8 bottles) were sold due to divorce. I managed to buy 2 of them back a few years later with the intention of drinking them at my 50th, but when the eventual day came, I had a Rum tasting instead....they were due to be drunk at my goodbye dinner before moving here, but the boys had plenty of red wine for me and so they got gezumped ...looking forward to finally trying it

I’ve been fortunate enough to have had the Block42 on several occasions, one memorably being a magnum at my 60th a while ago (along with a whole lot of other stuff). It was outstanding, although still very youthful and it was close to vinfanticide at 18 yrs of age!! Will be good to get another look at it in a line-up that’s shaping up extremely well.

No worries Malcolm.
With Con's indulgence I might bring along a 1982 Vintage Port in case both are stuffed.......
Cheers

No problem Michael it sounds good.
Don’t know if it matters, the 1980 Moss Wood is the Reserve and my back up will be the 1994 Cullen Reserve.
If everyone doesn’t mind I would also like to put on a 1986 Tahbilk Bin 73 Cabernet as an extra that I picked up at auction a couple of nights ago.
It’s shaping up to be a great night, see you all there.
Cheers Con.

No need to include backup bottles in the wine rankings. Hopefully we don't need to use them.

That'd be great, Con. I haven't had an old Tahbilk for a very long time and I'd love to try one again. We'll include any extras in the wine rankings.

The pre-dinner ranking results are in!
It's a very close race between the '96 Moss Wood, '90 Chateau Leoville and the '96 Penfolds Block 42 for the best wine.

The chart above show the average ranking for each wine. Weights are applied in reverse to make the chart easier to understand (bigger=better).

So yet again my Block 42 curse kicks in...mjs stuck his hand in his cellar and pulled out a 1980 Bin 80a by mistake. Lovely wine, but not the best of the night. I’ll let Ozzie W post the scores, but the revalation of the night for me was the 1980 Miss Wood, that defied its age. Joint top for me, along with the 96,the 90 Poyferre and the 98 Reynell.

Ozzie, thanks for the photos.
Yes, a great night. It was fun when towards the end of the tasting, you think you've tasted three bottles of 96 Moss Wood and haven't tasted a couple of the others at all! I couldn't really split the 90 Ch Leoville Poyferre and the 98 Ch Reynell for my WOTN. Although, in reality, all of the wines were good to great and had something to offer, apart from the unfortunately corked Ch Tahbilk. You would be happy drinking any of them I think
Good to see some new faces and some old returnees from interstate! Again, apologies for my stuff up with the 80A in lieu of the Block42, the 80A was in very good nick though and almost made up for it.
