TN: Peel Estate Shiraz 2003

This 40-year established producer is technically in the Geographe region of WA - in reality, it's now almost suburbia, being approx. 50km from Perth and only a couple of kms from the burbs. Their annual Grand Shiraz tasting pits the PE against 19 of the world' best Shiraz - and always includes a Grange and usually a H.O.G.
I did a vertical of this wine a couple of years ago: http://forum.m.auswine.com.au/forum3/viewto ... bf#p128371, which included this wine. The TN at the time (2015) read:
From a warm year in WA. This is the first wine starting to show some secondary characters. There's a spicy, wild nose, with a lot happening. It's porty, with some beef jerky and salted caramel. The palate continues with sweet big ripe fruit, predominantly stewed plums. There's a good acid spine, and a hot finish almost like a fortified wine. It's a muscular wine, which could be at its peak now.
I was wrong. It's shifted over the intervening 2.5 years, and has mellowed somewhat. The "hot" characters have almost disappeared, and the fruit is developed, but retains some sweetness. There's Christmas cake / raisin, and a lot of the richness you might expect from a big but mature Shiraz. Much better this time around …….
….. and my last bottle. I suspect the differences are due to the cork closure. Enough said.
