BIRTH year wines

Just wondering what other forumites have put away for the kiddies?
Any stories and or reasons as to why you have a particular wine or wines held back for future celebrations?
Clearly the wine in question needs to have fairly serious ageing potential.
18-21 years +
I have some 2012 Wendourees which I'm hoping will go the distance for my first born.
AS for the second (2016) I've glanced at my CT producer listing of that year and nothing's really jumping out at me
so I thought I better start making some moves in that area.

My first (and so far only) was born in 2017, so many wines that are designed to keep for a couple of decades aren't released yet.
Initial reports suggest that 2017 Bordeaux is good enough to buy, but maybe not good enough to hoard, so I'll buy maybe a case of red, and a case of sauternes. Barolo is my other main passion, so I'll probably pick up a case or two of this when it's released in a few years, but I always think Nebbiolo is a hard grape to love if you're not into wine, so may end up drinking this myself. Probably pick up a few other bits & pieces over the next few years, depending on where the vintages are best.

Good topic this Scotty V...
Lads were born in 94 and 97...first born just missed the crap wet 95 vintage by a few days.
I went fairly berserk with both of them. They have about 3 dozen different labels in single and magnum format including all the usual suspects bar (Grange and HoG...silly silly prices).
When you are down to a partner who may not be in full time work, particularly for the first born's vintage release, by the time the second one arrives, economics kick in.
I agree very much with Asajoseph...you can get caught up with the occasion, but you can also get caught up with the excess and who are you really drinking these wines for...them or more likely You
So plenty of YV, Coonawarra and MR cab
Plenty of MV, Barossa, Clare, Central Victoria and some Hunter Shiraz
Even a few rizzas
Cheers
Craig

I was thinking maybe sweet wines would work well - both in ability to survive the time needed for your kids to enjoy them, and also in approachability for people who don't necessarily otherwise enjoy or appreciate wine.
And they're generally cheaper too.

I've put away three Henschke Keyneton Euphonium's, Rockford Basket Press Shiraz (and maybe Wynn's Black Label Cab Sauv?) for our eldest (2013) and I'll do the same for the other two when I can. Budget and storage limit what we've chosen and we really like them but we haven't set aside any particular years for consumption, maybe finishing each schooling era. I'd love one HoG each but that's out of the question and there's plenty of other wine that we could buy for that price. But they're not HoG... so I've been wondering what else I might find and create a case each.

1st born 2011, so WA and Hunter Valley for her. Woodlands, leeuwin, Tyrrells, lakes folly
2nd born 2014, haven’t really started on that yet as I like to buy excess stock at auction and not a lot from that vintage hitting the market yet.

First Son 2009, bought a fair bit of Hunter and Margaret River, little BDX.
Second Son 2012, unfortunately Hunter a write off. Good most everywhere else though - Some MR, Yarra, some Piedmont, some Marius and a bit of other SA.
Third Son 2015, unfortunately Hunter a write off. Again good a lot of places. I’ll probably buy a little BDX and as much Piedmont as I can afford (plus a little more). I need to get some German Riesling too. Actually I’d like to backfill Riesling for each of the boys’ years.
I like the idea of birth vintages, of my own kids, and gifts for close friends. Maybe the kids will get some when they’re older but it’s mainly for the parents, a nice way to mark the passing of time.

I wouldn’t hold out too much hope for excess 2014 Hunter stock mate.
2014 Graveyard or hunter in general seems to be where it’s at (or more precisely, was). Many (especially Tyrrels) sold through cellar door clubs and people are clutching onto their 2014 graveyards and I’m not expecting to see them hit the 2ndary market, so I picked up a couple outright
Not holding out much hope for the remaining hunter 14s hitting the market either but I missed the 2014 hunter boat (having a baby/toddler will do that to you - money becomes tight and lack of sleep means buying wine is one of the last things on your mind!) so I’m hoping that a few pop up eventually in time too

Yes, been down this path for quite some time now. I think this is a lot more fun for the parent / wine buyer nut than the child in question.
1st son born 1996: Ch. Yquem, Ch. Latour, Ch Lafite Rothschild, Ch. Mouton Rothschild, Ch. Leoville Poyferre, Grange, Wendouree (all 5 reds), Bin 389, Mount Mary Quintet, YY Dry Red No. 1, Rockford BP, Best's Thomson Shiraz
2nd son born 1999: Ch. Yquem, Ch. Latour, Chave Hermitage, Guigal Ch. d'Ampuis, Delas Hermitage Bressards, Comte Armand Clos des Epeneaux (magnum) Giacosa Rocche Di Falletto, Kesseler Rudesheimer Berg Roseneck TBA, Grange, Wendouree (all 5 reds), YY Dry Red No. 1, Rockford BP, Best's FWT Shiraz, Dalwhinnie Shiraz
The selection of wine listed can tell you how much my wine buying habits evolved between son #1 and son #2!
Almost no burgundies for them as I am drinking them all myself

There was a lot of Brokenwood HV Shiraz at auction. A spectacular wine for the price.
Halliday:
"a bare minimum of 30 years [wine]"
Campbell Mattinson:
"It’s built for the future."
Brokenwood Website:
"The Shiraz grapes are source solely from the Graveyard Vineyard"
Don't think I fathered a child that year
Probably worth the RRP if you can still get it.

Have some '93 Grange and '93 707 for my son, but he's showing little interest in reds yet. His "inheritance" is looking dodgy
Apart from children, what about moi?
Have a '54 Wynns Cabernet (not BL then) and a '54 Hardy's Reserve Bin Show Tawny

FWIW I've always thought ageworthy dessert wines ought to be the safe bet for 18th / 21st birthday. Maybe mags of Spatlese / Auslese riesling if you plan a party.

I'm also thinking of adding some for the long haul. Had Henschke not gone stupid on the Mt Edelstone pricing I'd have gone one for their 21st's so I'm thinking maybe a St Henri and a magnum of Rockford BPS.

For my oldest lad we had '94 Mt Edelstone and John Riddoch which were both amazing on his 21st.
For the youngest I've bought magnums of '09 Charles Melton Voice of Angels Shiraz, Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling, John Duval Entity x 2 and Plexus x 2, Torbreck Steading, Gomersal Shiraz x 3, Kalleske Greenock Shiraz, Turkey Flat Shiraz x 2, Rockford Basket Press x 3 and many others in 750ml format. I went a little berserk to be honest, so we have a couple of bottles on his every Birthday from '09. I am saving a few special ones such as Clonakilla SV, Tyrrells 4 Acres and Old Paddock, Cape Mentelle Cabernet, Grosset Polish Hill, Noon Reserve Shiraz and the d'Arenburg Vineyard series for his 21st as well. Hopefully they all go the distance.
Cheers
Ian

Unfortunately son born 95 has really developed a taste for reds. Really dumb move introducing him to them so early. One bottle is not enough for 3 people which is a pain now so we are forced to open a 2nd. A bit like my parents forever regretting introducing me to oysters at an early age.
