Morning all.
Where's good to eat/drink in and or around Penola and Robe?
Cheers,

I'd be interested too, thanks for posting Travis. Overdue for a trip down that away- especially about cray season!

Awhile ago now: Providores in Robe did great breakfast and lunch. Pipers of Penola also recommend. Hollicks as well but haven’t been there for years...

Best restaurant in Penola (and undoubtedly country SA) is Pipers of Penola. Simon and Erika Bowen run this, Simon (Doug’s son) is the chef, Erika runs front of house. Food is superb, modern Australian, byo is no problem, you must go.

Sky Seafoods in Robe, the best place for fresh cray, just do it yourself, they will split and clean for you

Upstairs at Hollick is probably the next best in/near Penola. Ottelia in Coonawarra village is good as well. Pubs in Penola are average.

There's an awesome pizza joint on the Main Street in Robe, name escapes me at the minute. A decent Coonawarra Shiraz and pizza goes down a treat.

You really need to get out and see more of "country SA"

Second vote for Pipers of Penola. The Barn Steakhouse in Mt Gambier is decent. Haven't been to Mayura Station, but have heard that the steak there is divine.

Been to one up your way Matt, rhymes with what happens when you cut yourself...accidentally of course ( don't want the lawyers ringing again) but found both service and the food itself disjointed...non-byo friendly and quite expensive...certainly more so than Pipers.
Do like the Auburn pub, the restaurant that used to be Tatenhams and the the 7 hill hotel is pretty good.
Whilst Vintners Bar, Ferment Asian and Fino ( have not been to Henty farm or Appelation or Jacobs Creek yet) are all Barossa faves and generally excellent, Mclaren Vale for me is the one area that is streets ahead for good places, Willunga, simple beach food at Aldinga even a scallop pie at a local bakery, D'arry's, S of G, The Victory, Ellen St, Russell's and some other pizza joint I went to on the way to Mclaren flat, Kitchen Door at Penny's Hill, Salopian Inn has never been better...and many more.
Pipers, Hollick, Penola Station, Othellia and even David Meek's butcher shop for a rib eye ( if the place you are staying at has facilities, plus a local IGA for anything you could want) are all top options. The old hotel is rubbish, the other one much better for good pub fare.
Have not been to Robe for 25 years.
Cheers
Craig.
