2005 Coates The Gimp Shiraz, South Australia (DIAM cork): 14.5% alc. 87% McLaren Vale & 13% Langhorne Creek Shiraz. Medium to very dark blood red, still some purple remaining. At the moment it seems to show strong Langhorne Creek influences despite being the minor partner of the multi-region blend, with obvious peppermint and spearmint characters matched to sweet raspberries and earth, mud chocolate and cedar. The earthy palate’s medium to full weight, with thick velvety tannins and a minty finish; over the last 7 years the initially obvious oak has been swallowed up by the fruit - it’s marvellous drinking now but still has a lot of development potential.
