1998 Jamiesons Run Merlot, Coonawarra (cork): 12.5% alc. Medium to darkish garnet/brick. Dusty, soupy, meaty, sweet and sour at this stage with sweet espresso, cocoa shavings, sour plums, cedar, pencil shavings, celery, spinach, leather, beef stock and black liquorice. The palate’s medium-weight with a decent core of juicy plum fruit that bounces between sweet and sour, the vegetal and leathery characters more prominent with breathing, finishing with a lick of sweet cedar oak. For a wine that was to reward 2-3 years cellaring on the back label it’s still hanging in there, but the end is in sight - drink up.
