TN: Mount Langhi Ghiran Cliff Edge Shiraz 2010

Post by Waiters Friend »

Crimson bordering on garnet - clear and bright.

Quite peppery on the nose, alongside almost delicate and perfumed plummy fruit. Some spice, including cloves / cinnamon and some vanilla. Palate is medium-weight, with a touch of mocha alongside the dark fruits, and a velvety texture across the tongue.

I suspect this is at its peak - drink up.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

I agree with your timing. I have found I tend to like Cliff Edge more as a younger wine maybe 4-6 years from vintage rather than older, based on 05-08 vintages with slightly extended cellaring. All my 09-10 vintages drunk in the past few years.

Edit: nope, list says I have one '09 left. Better get it on the bench!

Please report back on the 09 - I've got a few lying around in the cellar that I probably need to get to.

For some reason I've always found the 09 highly acidic... and I love acid and cool climate reds. To me, it feels/tastes over acidified? No idea if it is, but I've put our remaining bottles back a bit for a 3-4 year sleep. Last bottle tried was about 12 months ago.

Hope this helps. Cheers, Travis.

I have a pair of 10's, thanks for the note. I'll put them on the short list of wines to drink ASAP.

I ignored my own advice. Cracking my second last bottle tonight, and it's not shifted a great deal in a couple of years. Pepper has diminished and the spices are still evident. It's got noticeable acid, which implies the fruit might be diminishing, but all in all, it's quite similar to the previous TN.

I'd still say "drink up" and will follow my own advice this time.
