TN: 2001 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Post by n4sir »

2001 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (cork): 14% alc. Medium to very dark blood red. Powerful, inky nose full of blackcurrant, fine spicy/biscuity oak and sweet black liquorice, black olives and peppermint with a little breathing; the palate’s just as powerful, genuinely full-weight with more obvious cedar oak on the finish. This vintage of black label is improving with each try, losing its rough edges, yet it is still meshing and needs to be left alone for a few years. It has a lot more potential than the Harold Single Vineyard release, and I suspect it will ultimately be the better wine.

Yes agreed, think this is a bit of a sleeper vintage Ian, and yes better than the Harold.
Good to see it has plenty to go.

By the way, you weren't kidding when you said you need to make up for lost time...1 AM wine notes that's the spirit!
Cheers
Craig.
Tomorrow will be a good day

Thought I had a bottle of the '01 Black Label but apparently not. What I have, in addition to others, is the 2000 vintage which I believe is a weaker vintage. A quick look at Jeremy Oliver's latest guide and I see that your '01 is in the middle of it's 2013-2021 drinking window whereas the '00 is past its 2008-2012 window. I'm not particularly worried as a recent '01 Paringa Shiraz from the Murray River area (not Paringa Estate) was quite elegant and delicious so I expect a cabernet to be a little longer lasting.

I wouldn't worry unduly if Jeremy Oliver has the drinking window closing or recently closed. However if the same is true of Geoff Kelly, then I'm not sure I'd open the bottle with too much confidence!
