TN: Dutshcke St Jakobi Shiraz 98

Bright and clear, still with some purple notes. Fresh, gragrant "purple jube" and vanilla nose. The palate expresses as younger than 6 years old, all fruit in the plum berry spectrum and some savoury stuff in the background too. Tight, grippy, medium.fine tannin. Fresh, lovely medium bodied, nicely balanced. Will live a few more years yet. Outstanding.

Also tasted the 99 and 02 last night. Didn't take notes, but you can certainly see the style, fragrant sweet fruit, subtle oak. The 99 is good, the 02 is also excellent (and the 99 and 02 Oscar Semmler's are both stunning).

The Willow Bend? yes, but unfortunately I had just had a mouthful of cheese that had a big bit of rind on it. I wasnt so sure about the 02 Willow Bend, but others liked it a lot. Didnt take notes, so no detail beyond that, :oops:

bottle of the 2000 Jakobi last night. I did not take notes, but this has to be one of the over-performers of the vintage, and from memory of bottles about a year back, this is still on the uptake. Have you tried it, Wizz? ..and if so, how does it stack up against the others? I'm considering a buy of the 2002.

Jakob, no I missed the 2000 completely, but the 98 and 99 are great, I havent opened any of my 01's yet, and the 02 is a cracker.

We put the St Jakobi 02 up against the Kalleske 02 last night.

The panel was split 50/50 on which was top.

Great to hear- I would love to buy several cases of the St Jak 02 in screwcap- excellent fruit and oak balance.
The Kalleske shiraz 02 I havent tried, but the grenache is the best varietal grenache I have had in Australia.

Had a 98 St.Jakobi last week, bloody good wine. Also agree with comments about later vintages.

This now looks like being one of those labels you buy with confidence and anticipation every year.

Screw caps do it for me every time, glad they've appeared on this wine.

Got to try 03 samples of the (Kalleske) Grenache and Shiraz from the barrells a few weeks back. I'll be buying these. The 04 "old vine" fruit on the vine was spectacular.

That 98 is a freak wine- it broke him into the states unfortunately. We tried blind 12 damn top notch wines and this one was easily voted number one.
The 2002 is as good.

I do agree with you re Kalleske Grenache. I tasted and didnt buy, it was to up front fro me to understand I think. Everytime I remember the wine now I kick myself for missing out.

Your favourite retailer will be stocking them, the 03 Kalleskes, I've already tried the 2003 barrel samples.

BTW agree 100% with the 02 Dutschke's, I'm even getting a little of the 22 yr Old Tawny to sell this year.

I bought one of the 02 Kalleske and opened it and regretted I was on a non buying experience.
I know someone whom hates grenache and has some in his cellar but he will not share with me! :cry:

I wonder if 03 will be as good :?:
