G'day

This subject has been raised before - a quick search shows it has been a few years, however, and many of the restaurants mentioned at that time no longer exist. I particularly mourn the passing of Da Bruno n Inglewood ......

So, let's have your suggestions for quality BYOs in Perth. I'm looking for reasonable corkage (and preferably per person rather than per bottle), good glassware, and of course, good food and preferably service from people that might understand and have an interest in wine.

Just out of curiosity, how many people on here live in Perth?

I am in Perth. Re BYO restaurants, I can't really help. Many of the restaurants I frequent (or use to) still believe a mining boom is on.

Being from Perth I better jump in. I don’t seem to get out as much these days so I haven’t really uncovered any new gems of late but a good BYO is often on my radar. These are ones I remember in the last year.

I quite like Japanese food so a few that we frequent inlcude:

Nine Fine Food, North Perth: Nice banquet option, pleasant food, smallish groups best.

Kiri, Shenton Park: Again smaller groups (4-6 people) best, food clean and fresh, glassware ok.

Marumo, Nedlands: Set menu only with cult like reservation process requiring months in advance booking. BYO only there. Worth trying once for sure. You don’t get a choice in the menu and plenty of courses to get through so take a good variety of wine to match accordingly and have some leftovers for next day. Their glassware is poor though.

Being a wine wanker I’m happy to take my own glasses and have done to all of the above.

Others we frequent:

Cantina, Mount Lawley: I haven’t been for a while but they use to do a chef selection for the table with some pretty cool and exciting foods. BYO was mid week some time which was great. Griff we ended up there with your mate Monghead one night, certainly took the Zaltos then!

Circa, Mount Lawley: Over the road from Cantina. Honest food. They’ve got a liquor licence but I think you can still BYO (would check first). Glassware was reasonable too.

Yabba Dabba, Dalkeith: Fun and lively pizzeria, good for the kids too. Glassware fine but take you own if you drinking some top end wine. Is also licensed so can have a beer or two to warm up with before moving on to wine. I don’t think I’ve bought any wine off their wine list but I do remember thinking their pricing was most reasonable (especially for Perth!)

Chez Pierre, Nedlands: Definitely a favourite. Fine dining French. They do a great priced 5(?) course set menu that changes each week. BYO during the week and they have great staff to look after your wine nicely. Will decant your wine as well as having good glassware. Always a top night out.

I wish I was getting out and going to more though!

Yabba dabba does a great bacon egg roll plus coffee for $10 which is worth a try (and they do generally good breakfasts).

My tip for BYO is Valdarnos (just a block down the road from YD in Dalkeith). Glassware is basic but will do if you don't bring your own. Food is good quality, reasonable prices and big portions. My favourite meal is a mediam rare bistecca with bacon and cream sauce and a great shiraz or cabernet to cut through. They do an awesome lemon meringue also. Edit: byo every day including Friday / Saturday

Actually thinking of starting a monthly "paper bag" wine evening there with friends if anyone is interested. Biggest issue will be getting a table as it's not large and is always busy.

Guilty of this crime too. In fact, I even smashed one of my Riedel Vinum Extremes on the way home from Kiri one night

I'd be up for an offline in Perth but didn't think we had sufficient level of interest. There is a WA Fine Wine Club but I haven't been able to score an invite so was just going to organise my own at Valdarnos... If anyone else in Perth would be interested in an event at Varldarnos please let me know and I will include you in any plans. How many people is a good number for an offline? I assume you want enough so you can try lots of wines but not so many that you barely get a mouthful of each wine. Alternatively, if anyone else wants to organise an offline I'd be interested in attending...

I'd certainly be up for an offline when I arrive at the end of the month/early March/any time that suits others!

Just realised 4th is on the public holiday weekend. Thinking 11th March may get a better reaction. Will start a separate thread.

I'd be keen for a perth offline.

Nice BYO places in Perth
- Nine fine foods
- Francoforte: note - casual, but great experience a year or so ago, had a wine tasting event with a small group - the chef got involved. very nice.

Count me in!

I can recommend P'tite Ardoise on Beaufort St Northbridge, for BYO by arrangement on a Wednesday or Thursday night. $10 per bottle corkage up to a maximum of $10 per head.

Juniper & Bay is the place to go. The owner Soren also runs the WA Wine and Food Society and allows you to BYO during the week (or at least, on some nights during the week).

Food is fabulous and reasonably priced.
