38 Years between drinks

For your view pleasure or displeasure.

"38 Years Between Drinks". Oil on fine cotton duck. 61 x 43 cm.

This painting was inspired by several rather remarkable events. The Golden Ox Restaurant in Redcliffe (Queensland) was where I got my first job as a wine waiter way back in 1978. The owner gave me a reference which assisted me in getting a job as a flight steward with Qantas. After an absence of 38 years my mum told me that she had organised a get together lunch at the Golden Ox. Unbelievably when I walked in after 38 years, not only was the restaurant still going strong, Nick and Virginia Tzimas still owned and worked in the restaurant. This feat must surely put the Golden Ox and the Tzimas family amongst a unique group of restaurateurs.

To celebrate this incredible milestone I painted "38 Years Between Drinks". I took the original logo on one wine glass and the newer logo on the other. One empty glass and one full to signify the coming together of a long, long relationship.

Another great effort. Although I did spot it was a painting this time because it was a picture posted by you. Otherwise I would have said it was a photo.

Beautiful Rob. Just slightly less photo-like which I really think is for the better, shows a deft touch balancing between realism and artistry.

Great story, two questions though, how was the food, and do they allow BYO? :D

Thank you Rens. Thank you too TiggerK.

The food 38 years ago was pretty good, however I thought my lunch of bugs in Galliano sauce just recently was sensational. I don't know about the BYO. To be honest, the wine selection might prove a little "narrow" for the folks here and the wine glasses probably wouldn't suit this crowd either. I'd phone up and ask or they have a facebook page which might answer your enquiry.

Another great painting Rob, I like how you've got even the style of glasses as part of the timeline story (please tell me they don't still use those glasses today) :D

Some great reflective work, which can make or break the paintings realism.

Thanks dave vino. Actually the glass on the right is the current goblet in service shall we say. The glass on the left despite it's looks is rimless and isn't too bad of a wine glass. I know that several forum members here take their own stemware with them to restaurants and for them I recommend they keep doing so in this instance. With regards to the food, I couldn't fault it when I worked there 38 years ago and it was excellent earlier this year. You would have to accept that a restaurant couldn't stay open for over 40 years selling dud tucker.

I wish I had that much talent or even 10%. My efforts would look more like the covers of the two Self Portrait albums by Bob Dylan. 5 year old level at best.

Great job Rob!!

Thank you Carl. I wish I could paint a little faster though. Next work "Sabrage" is now over a week old and only has a sketch on the canvas. Cheers again.
