G'day

After my recent trip to McLaren Vale, I was surprised to see some of the wines readily available in Perth, including a couple of back vintages. So, after enthusing about the 2013, it's time to open a 2010.

Still purple at 6 years old. The nose is similar to the 2013, but more concentrated (better vintage?), with savoury oak, rich dark berries and black plums, rich chocolate and some coffee. The palate is medium to full bodied, rich and satisfying without being too heavy. Balance is the key here, a touch of leather in amongst the fruit, acid, tannins and oak. I reckon this will be even better in 2-3 years, when it will probably be at its peak. An impressive wine, especially for the price.

Looking at this 3 and a half years later, it seems my prediction from 2016 was pretty good. Still purple in the glass, with the tasting note from 2016 still appropriate, and even amplified. The nose has more concentrated dark fruits (plums and blueberries), more chocolate, vanilla and spices. The palate has gone up a notch too, and is more complex, with the secondary characters of leather and savoury notes complementing the dark fruits. There's a nice balance between acid and viscosity, and a medium to long finish.

For the price (about $25), this is sensational. And, at its peak as predicted. I'll take a bow

Allan had an opportunity to pick up the '16 HJ shiraz for $35 a bottle...alas missed out. Should get a few of these, as MV shiraz is right up there for me. Sound like you had a great bottle.

Had a '17 the other night. Excellent. Think my last in a sixer but I've got a fair bit of HJ lying around and a handful of M53's.
Great winery. Great vino overall. Got a dozen 16 OT Fianos parked as well.
