MyattsField Touriga 2015

G'day
I suspect this is from one of the few plantings of Touriga Nacionale in WA - a variety better known for Portuguese port. I've had previous vintages of this, and been intrigued, with 2009 and 2010 both looking pretty good now. It's interesting to look at a young one.
There's similarities with port - but not the alcohol (14.2%). However, there's the fruit richness, spice and sweetness that you might get from a port, along with fine grained tannins, and cleansing acidity. There's a long finish, and it's a medium to full bodied wine, in a style that is different to the usual Aussie red. Time to get some more.
Cheers
Allan

Allan, your post reminds me of a Touriga blend made by Sevenhills Winery in the Clare Valley. It was a while ago, when my partner and I were touring parts of South Australia, and it was a savoury blend of Shiraz, Touriga and Malbec and was called Sevenhills STG. We quite fancied it for it's grainy, savoury tone and its dry, grippy finish. I suspect they made this blend because they had Touriga plantings that they used in their ports. This wine and the 1987 Port were the wines that most impressed us though most of their white wines were already sold out due to the preceding hot summer.
Do you know if MyattsField makes port wine?
Cheers..................Mahmoud.

Hi Mahmoud,
Sevenhill is still making this wine, it's now under the 'Four Buckets' range:

I've seen a Blend from LAS Vinhos in Margaret River that Touriga dominant from 40 year old vines but that is the only other one I know of from there. We are starting to see more out of the Barossa and Mclaren Vale, while there has been a little around in Northern Victoria for a while as well.
It's probably worth noting that portuguese port is always a blend, usually from at least 4 or 5 varieties but often many more. These usually include Tourgia Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Cao and often Tinta Barocca, Tourgia Franca, Tinta Amarela, Sousoao as well as a whole lot of others.
Straight Touriga table wines are still a relatively new thing - both here and in Portugal, and in general the better ones are blends over there.

Details for MyattsField here
http://www.myattsfield.com.au/. The usual disclaimer - I have no business or financial connection - just a fan. And yes, there's a fortified in the range.
BTW, my wine tasting group tasted a Portuguese Touriga last week. Notes to follow.
