G'day

After the Adelaide Offline on Friday, I am heading down to McLaren Vale for the first time in 21 years.

Maxwell is top of my list, and I'd like to call into Olivers Taranga. Any recommendations for lunch, for dinner and some must-visit wineries?

Cheers
Allan

It's been a while, but I'd go here:

Samuels Gorge
Coriole
Chapel Hill
Kay's

Lunch at d'Arenberg (book). d'Arenberg also do a "blend your own bottle" thing...we really enjoyed it, and you would need to book well in advance.

Hope that helps a bit.

We went to The Barn for lunch when we were there a couple of years back. Best calamari (probably) ever! And the rest was good too. Long past the days when we used to go there in the late 70's/early 80's.

Although I didn't buy much, Kay's was a good tasting and they offered everything. If you kinda look like you know what you are talking about, then they will open the Block 6. Not sure what the current vintage is, but it was 2011 when I went which was average. But they also opened a 2010 which was superb.

Also tasted at Olivers Taranga but I didn't really like their range.

As for lunch, I had a very nice lunch at "The Elbow Room". Pretty nice peaceful view of their gardens out the back and food was nice too.

As far as wineries go, I'd look at:

Alpha Box and Dice
Samuels Gorge
Yangarra
Primo (pay for the top end tasting)
Kay Bros
SC Pannell

Depending on time available:

Another vote for Yangarra from me
Pertaringa (wines by Geoff Hardy)
d'Arenberg - I've been there only on 2 occasions, both times the tasting experience was amazing, very knowledgeable and attentive staff.
Book for lunch here too.

Yangarra is a must IMO.
A little out of the way in Mclaren Flat but worth the effort.
Also +1 for Alpha Box & Dice and Oliver's Taranga.
Paxtons also another to consider.

I went to Maxwell's Ellen Street restaurant about a week ago.
It didn't wow me to be honest.
It's such a crying shame FINO closed their Willunga location. :(
I've been to the Seppeltsfield installment and the charm is gone for me.
The food was outstanding but I miss the unassuming little FINO that started it all.
As Craig points out I'm sure the Adelaide offline will provide many an opinion on where to go.

Yes, this list.

Coriole and d'Arenberg may also float your boat.

Coles is surprisingly good, as is the butcher in the same complex.

The Coles store has a very large floor area for a fairly small town like McLaren Vale. Space for lots of great fresh food.

Wineries - I would add in Battle of Bosworth (down south near Willunga) to the list.
