Had some 1979 Vino Cotto on the weekend.
OK. It's not a wine, as the wort is made from grapes boiled down to about a third their original weight, prior to fermentation. And it's not readily available, as the stuff that's out there now as Vino Cotto (or Vincotto) is generally made from the unfermented (boiled down) juice and about 30% vinegar. The Wikipedia says it's a type of wine from Marche and Abruzzo in Italy, but almost exclusively made for personal use only.
So, this is where I got mine from. My father-in-law made this batch in 1979 and it's been sitting in 5 litre bottles ever since. We got two of them recently and transferred one of them to smaller bottles (as the original had 37 years of sediment at the bottom of the jars). An unusual sweet wine, a little reminiscent of Muscat, but very drinkable.
Not sure if anyone has had any other grape based alcoholic beverages along similar or different lines - excluding distilled spirits. But thought I'd mention this one just to prompt any memories...
