Melbourne CBD Wine Bars.

Post by TravisW »

Morning all. What are some cool, funky, hip, groovy, down-with-the-youth wine bars in-and-around the Melbourne CBD?

Cheers, Travis. :-)

Beat me to it!

Kirks is fairly new and in the CBD. I've not been, but it is the people from the European so it is bound to be good.

Most of the better wine bars are going to be outside of CBD mostly in the inner burbs... Some I've been to, Some I haven't but I've heard good things about all.
Fitzroy - Marion, Bar Liberty, Neighbourhood Wine, The bar at Cutler and Co
North Melbourne - Clever Polly's
South Melbourne - Bellota
Port Melbourne - Harry & Frankie

Let me know if you need beer or whiskey bar recomendations. In truth I probably spend more time in those anyway.

Take all this with a grain of salt though because I'm not sure I qualify as any of cool, funky, hip, groovy or down-with-the-youth!

OMG, Walter's Wine Bar has closed! That definitely removes me from "cool, funky, hip, groovy, down-with-the-youth"!

http://geraldsbar.com.au/ in Rathdowne St Carlton has been great for many years now, and further up in Brunswick East, Tim Cohen's excellent Wine Store is really kicking along now. See customer feedback here: https://www.yelp.com.au/biz/brunswick-east-wine-store-brunswick-east

And a wine-bar has just opened in Brunswick East that deliberately pitched itself as "for the young, hip and groovy", so I naturally haven't checked it out. It's called Noisy Ritual: http://noisyritual.com.au/#noisy

"People-powered urban wine bar" - ????

Enjoy.

I've been meaning to get out to Tim Cohen's place... It is such a long way from my house though. One day I'll make it.

I heard someone talking about Noisy Ritual on the radio a few weeks ago. It didn't spark my interest, but I'm not really in their demographic

Indeed Paul, I passed out of their demo many years back. It's a short walk from my house, and even that can't draw me in :(

Tim's place is very much our speed. I am an irregular customer, but from the limited visits I have made, he seems to be doing okay. I totally understand the difficulty in making the scene though. Just hope some event gets you into the area.

I hate to appear cynical (so don't read any further) but just about every wine bar I've ever been to has simply been a way of charging more for a glass of plonk than you'd have to pay in a restaurant. In a noisy environment. And back when I used to try it, smokers were allowed in (I know, I was one of them).
But I guess that was the epitome of chic (or is it 'hipster', now?) back then.
