John Kosovich Pinot Noir 2011 (Pemberton)

Like a few Swan Valley producers, the Kosovich family dipped their vinous toes outside of the Swan Valley at least 20 years ago. Some producers chose Margaret River (like Sandalford, Houghton, Jane Brook) - the Kosovich's chose Pemberton and environs.

It's served them well, and this Pinot Noir is a prime example. Red/purple in colour, with a straightforward nose of strawberry and fresh cheery, along with some earthiness and mushroom. The palate is quite harmonious - a balance of acidity, fresh and developing fruit, and moderate integrated tannins. The wine finishes fresh, with medium length.

It's not going to challenge Tasmania or Burgundy, but an enjoyable medium bodied wine nevertheless.

I opened my last bottle tonight with some pinot-loving friends. They were impressed, served alongside a lighter and more delicate Tassie PN.

The wine has filled out a little over the past two years, and the earthiness and mushroom have developed, to the point that it was overpowering on first pour. It settled down quickly, however, and filled a supporting role to the developed cherry fruit. The wine seems more complex than previously, and finishes fuller, while still being supported by the fine tannins and acid.

Probably as good as it will get, so drink now if you have some.
