Hi Sean,
Went to Trofeo for lunch today and did some tastings, just of the Amphora wines.
Yeah, like what they are doing.
The 2015 Amphora Pinot Gris certainly gave me that added texture that oak can (without the oaky notes), but lacked enough fruit flavour to really be up there with the Peninsula's best. Average length.
Found the 2015 Amphora Chardonnay soft, well made. textural and very easy to drink. Average length, good acid.
The 2014 Amphora Pinot Noir had beautifully perfumed aromatics, lovely soft palate with lively fresh high quality fruit, ok length.
I think the carefull handling of fruit is evident in both wines, nothing out of place, both good quality. The only negative (if I had to) is that perhaps, compared to well handled oak, the Amphora doesn't have the added complexity and ability to carry fruit flavour for a more persistent finish isn't there.
