Howard Park Great Southern Chardonnay 2012

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Several years ago, this was one of the wines that convinced me Aussie Chardonnay could age beyond 5 years from vintage. I've been buying this every year since 2007, and paradoxically, this is the first time I have broached the six pack of 2012 since buying (and tasting) it.

Moderate yellow in colour. A complex and intense nose of cashew, nectarine, honeydew melon and a touch of caramel. The palate has a strong line of acidity running through a rich toasty palate, with fruit, oak and acid balancing really well. It finishes quite long and satisfying.

There are elements of this wine that remind me of a Cullen chardonnay - especially the nose - but this is not Margaret River, and it's half the price. Still well and truly on the improve, and I reckon will peak in another 2-3 years.

Just as well I haven't opened the 13s and 14s yet.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
