MyattsField Shirax Viognier 2014

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

MyattsField is a Perth Hills winery who contract makes for several wineries as well as producing a wide range of their own wines from their own vineyards, as well as local and far-flung WA growers. This is from their own vineyards in Carmel.

It's also a 'Left Field Club' release - Josh and Rachael release a range of small batch wines to their wine club members. I suspect they do this to a) trial wines that might become commercial releases in future (although 'commercial' is a relative term in Perth Hills!) and b) because they like to play and experiment.

A Shiraz, Mourvedre, Viognier blend has been part of their 'main' line up for some years now. To my knowledge, this is the first time they have made a Shiraz Viognier.

The 2014 is 3% Viognier and 15% whole bunches. This is apparent in the nose, which shows fresh cherry, bright plum and a jube-like character. The palate is more complex, with the Viognier's apricot showing glossy across the palate, supported by moderate tea-like tannins (in fact, there's a hint of tea leaf here), some spice and good acidity leading to a medium finish.

A very pleasant medium bodied wine that should mature well over 3-5 years, I reckon, and it will be interesting to see if this becomes a regular in the main line-up.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
