1999 Geoff Merrill Cabernet Merlot magnum, McLaren Vale (cork): 13.0% alc. Medium to darkish garnet/brick. In the style of Penfolds Bin 707 with the American oak very much in the lead, meaty and minty cassis lifted by prominant banana/toasty vanillin oak and EA in the form of nail polish. The palate’s medium to full-weight with velvety, thick, soft tannins running through its length, the merlot component making a definite impact in the structure, finishing with a little sweet vanilla on the rebound. The balance of tangy cassis fruit, toasty vanillin oak and round tannins are excellent - overall it’s a great wine at its peak.
