yea, I last had that wine on my 40th birthday in 1998. Was past it then.
I guess the value reflects it's rarity these days, it would be pretty ordinary to drink imo.
also had the 58 Grange that night, also well past it.

I drank a 1956 and 1958 Mt Edelstone at a Henschke tasting with Stephen at The Wine Galley in Sydney sometime around 1990.
I have notes somewhere,both were quite drinkable then.

I have a few Henschke 50's HofG and Mt Ed ( 54 and 56 ) and they'll be off to auction if these prices are being achieved.

Drank a number of the HofG and Mt Ed from the early sixties and they were excellent wines.

Lot of money for a glass bottle, I'm thinking with that ullage level it isn't going to be too good anymore.

Yes, looks like passive cellaring.

And with brown glass, and definitely brown looking coloured wine...appearance more like Coca Cola than HoG!

Interesting wine. From the (now-defunct) Winepros website, back in 2002 Halliday did a review of HOG from 1958-1998 describing the 1958 as the first vintage ever released (although the comments above suggest otherwise?) saying it was drinking very well, and if the cork was sound should survive another 20-30 years.

I suspect this bottle will end up selling for a small fortune, regardless of provenance or bottle condition. I noticed it has already reached the bottom of the suggested bid range.
