March Sydney Offline: Burgundy vs. The World

Alternative title... March Sydney Offline: Burgur and Better

Can't let Melbourne show us up. Sydney (the superior city) will not be out done!

Title is pretty self explanatory, we can do it blind to eliminate bias. I'm thinking a Burgundy against two or so wines from other countries of similar age and style.

To differentiate this from other normal offlines, please bring a Burg, and if you feel like bringing a second bottle then feel free to make it non-Burg. If you don't own any Burgundy, like me, then try to track down a modestly priced bottle. A quick Google search will show up heaps of options in Sydney stores.

Date and place set as 6pm, Thursday 3rd March at La Boheme in Glebe.

Please confirm your attendance as soon as possible. :D

Limit set to 12.

Check page 4 for updated attendee list.

Great. We'll see what people can offer and coordinate it closer to the date to organise flights. I can bring white/red from lots of areas, both conventional and not so conventional. Just no Burgundy.

Hi Catch,

I am keen on this one, but I don't have Burgundy though, only Aussie Pinots.

I'm in for this...

Probably white burg and maybe something else not sure yet..

With some thought, I think it might not be a bad idea to make it so everyone needs to bring a Burgundy...I think it is a good way to learn a little bit about the region if you're not familiar with it already...

"The World" can just come from the extras..

Otherwise this is just another Pinot/Chardonnay theme because that's the type of mix we will have...

Yep, I'm in with bells on! I agree that everyone should bring a burgundy, you can get something decent from $50, so shouldn't be difficult.

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately, Lauren had a miscarriage late last month... Sucks and don't really want to go into it but one of the things means we can't try for about 9 months now... so we're both interested in coming to this one.

Can bring red Burg and non Burg.

Fair point. I'll start trying to track down some DRC and Leflaive then.

Hi Deejay,

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate event. I hope everything goes well for you and Lauren from now on.

No idea. Thinking something Asian, but open for whatever.

Likewise if anyone wants to nominate a preferred day? I know it's ages away but might as well start feeling things out now.

Also sorry to hear the news David and Lauren. :(

Alex, would prefer 2,3 or 4 March, i.e not a Saturday.

Sorry to hear about the news David...

I'm with Tim, prefer it not be Saturday....

So everyone needs to bring/find a Burgundy of some sort? Extras can be non-burgs for a comparison...Alex is in for a DRC? :)

Pretty much. Bring a Burg, and if you want to bring another bottle then feel free to make it non-Burg.

Hi catchnrelease, if it's fully booked, can I please be in your waiting list? I'm very keen on this. Maybe we put down which designation of Burgundy red/white we have got, so that we don't duplicate the wines? E.g. I have got a 1er Cru Chambolle-Musigny. Each area will have their own characteristics. It will be fun to see how much different they can be!

I don't think we will end up with duplicates...people will say what they're bringing..some won't say until the end...but it is highly unlikely we will have the exact same wine...Whether we get duplicates from the same area or same producer or same vintage...or whether they're all different, I think any of those scenarios is interesting.

I'll probably bring at least two wines...probably blind..not sure yet..

On the reserves. I wouldn't worry too much about duplicates, the odds are pretty low that they'll be the exact same wine. If there's some doubling up within areas that's fine as well. People can say what they're bringing to whatever degree or keep it completely blind, up to them.

Can I also put myself down as a reserve? Is there a location as yet?

Thanks

Thanks. I'll keep checking and see whether I can join in. I probably will drink this one for now, and get a different one for the tasting. Very interested in the difference among them. ;)

Andrew you've been added at 4th drop. Location and finer details will be worried about maybe 2-3 weeks or so before the event when people know their schedules a bit better. That's when people usually start dropping out too. :P

Reason for setting it up now is to give those who plan really far ahead a chance to work their schedules around the tasting if need be.

Date will likely be Friday 4th March to make it work friendly, provided there's a BYO restaurant available. Otherwise it may shift mid-week.

Pity I missed this one whilst away on holiday but can someone please put me on a waiting list.

If there are enough people on the waiting list the night of the actual event, I am happy doing a limited separate Burgundy tasting in the East with those that didn't make the cut. I am always keen to try more burgundy. So if people want to add their name to the reserves list, i am sure will have enough for another block of 12 in the end.
