Just saw it won the best Wine Publication at the Wine Communicator awards, and I've never heard of it. Quick Google to their website and I am seeing a sort of coffee table book upmarket version of Hallidays Wine Companion mag/Gourmet Traveller Wine mag.

Anybody read it? Any good? At $18 an issue it is not cheap but it looks WoFW thick and only has 2 issues per year. (http://alquimie.com.au/).

Worth a punt? I do like to sometimes read real books/mags away from the iPad and PC.

looks interesting but its very much a Melb based production with only four outlets in Sydney. I may try and pick up one today as I am going past one of the stockists (with a smallish detour)

I picked up an comp copy at an airport lounge somewhere, maybe late 2014 or early this year, and as it happens it's still in my desk drawer as I sit at work.... I sort of glanced through it initially and didn't capture me, but given a bit more time I found it very interesting.

It is definitely much more upmarket in presentation, print quality, and intent than GTW etc. More high-brow, though given some more esoteric subjects (than those other mags), it's still approachable without dumbing things down too much for me. It's mostly drinks, some food. On the drinks side - wine is in the majority, old world and new, and different perspectives and analysis if you're used to more mainstream Aus wine critics (as I am).

There were also features on Japanese whisky, a local craft beer brewery, Gin producers, a profile on a musician/coffee educator, and interestingly (for me) a Tea importer. Got me thinking about similarities between tea and wine - varieties, single origins, terroir, input from the maker etc. I could really get into tea, but I need another obsession like a hole in the head.

This issue was 160-odd pages and there's lots of content in there. I'd say it's worth getting a copy of the latest and see what you think.

Certainly piqued my interest, will grab a copy.

I've subscribed to it from issue 1 and continue to do so. Its a very high standard, quality focused, intellectual read which ranges widely across the global drinks industry and the personalities that make it. Independently written, not loaded with tastings. Coffee table read is a good description.

Its more expensive per issue than, say GT Wine, but there is no comparison. Highly recommended.

Tried 4 Sydney newsagents on their 'where to buy' list, nothing in stock, and only 1 had actually heard of the magazine!!

I've just back ordered 4 of the first 5 issues from the website direct (they were out of issue 3 it seems). Feel free to borrow them when they arrive and I've flicked through them Tim.

I bought the first one but didn't really like it - maybe it has improved.

Mine came in this morning, looks OK from a quick read, the tasting notes are a bit effusive in some instances, 'plum fruit billow from the glass' - have to remember that one.

Funny smell to the magazine, strange observation I know. Nice pictures and layout and not a million tasting notes that you normally gloss over, just a few wines which they go in-depth on. Some nice articles, definitely worth a look.

Well I gave my boss a Rockford Alicante and he liked it so much that he wanted a 6 pack so I figure I may as well get a case and it just happened to arrive at the same time.

Geez I hope that funny smell wasn't actually coming from the case of rockford!

No, Alicante has scents of strawberry, and rose petal billowing out of the glass.

It's a beautiful looking magazine with some equally good content - long overdue to subscribe.

Yep. My only complaint is I wish they'd pay more attention to how certain coloured text works on certain coloured backgrounds. Really struggle to read it sometimes due to the text blending into the background. The last issue is getting better with only a few bits here and there.

Other than that I am enjoying reading it, articles are a bit left of field which I enjoy - Greek Wines, Switzerland, Oregon wines, Nat White, Bill Downie etc, etc The articles are not WoFW in depth but a good balance.
